CRACK’D Artist: Sarah Baker Perfumer: Ashley Eden Kessler (for The Institute for Art and Olfaction) Ongoing
— MORE INFORMATION
We are pleased to team up with London-based artist Sarah Baker to create a series of conceptual perfumes in support of a large-scale project exploring the themes of luxury, extravagance, fashion and art. The scents will join the story to culminate in a 20 minute live scented radio-play: CRACK’D.
SCENT
SBPSarah Baker conceptualized a series of scents that were inspired by fabrics used in her fictional Impirio Rosso fashion brand, led by the fashion maven-cum-murderess Luccia Rosso, a woman haunted by the vengeful ghost of her late husband.
The scents have been crafted by independent perfumer Ashley Eden Kessler for The Institute for Art and Olfaction, and are inspired by luxury, richness, and the expensive fabrics that Luccia Rosso’s fashion brand has become known for: Leopard, Greek Keys, Equestrian.
The perfumes play into a larger narrative that Sarah has constructed around the fashion brand and its erstwhile leader – a story of murder, incest, intrigue, and fortunes won, lost and won again.
In keeping with her work, Sarah tells the story across several mediums: A film, a stage play, visual works, and of course these perfumes.
The perfumes were debuted at the AIX Scent Fair in Los Angeles, in May 2016.

CRACK’D
CrackdCrack’d is a 20-minute scented radio play, a fictional drama about a fashion-obsessed murderess attempting to create a luxury brand perfume line. In this dark comedy, Sarah Baker directs a motley cast of characters including a fashion magnate and the ghost of the husband she murdered, a psychic, an advertising executive who doubles as a self-help guru, and a perfumer. Complete with commercial breaks, Crack’d is an episode of an ongoing soap opera about a family-run luxury fashion brand facing bankruptcy.
Along side the actors, the audience will be witness to live Foley and music composed by a sound designer and, unlike your average radio play, perfumes will be disseminated into the audience. Created by perfumer Ashley Eden Kessler through The Institute for Art and Olfaction, these perfumes actually exist as an art edition, a collaboration currently in production under the name Sarah Baker Prfms.
In Crack’d, these glamorous perfumes only exist in the illusive dreams of fashion magnate Luccia Rosso; her fictional perfume line Rocco Rosso Riche is doomed to fail. All of Luccia’s efforts to make beautiful perfumes inspired by the luxurious fabrics of her world-famous fashion brand are sabotaged by the elaborate deceptions of the ghost of her murdered husband Rocco Rosso. In a comedy of errors perfumer Tino continually creates scents that describe the events of Rocco Rosso’s murder, exposing incriminating evidence to implicate Luccia. Despite repeated rescue attempts from her personal psychic and self-help guru, Luccia spirals in and out of fashion frenzied madness.
The afterlife, the subconscious, failure, guilt, catastrophe, and advertising plague this storyline, while the underlying narrative finely balances between social commentary on consumerism and it’s pleasure; absurdly juxtaposing the real collaborative creation of a luxurious perfume with an imagined high-end luxury powerhouse on the verge of collapse while in the unstable hands of a murderess.
This performance has been workshopped at the National Theatre Studio in London, and will have its Los Angeles premiere in February, 2017.

— ABOUT SARAH BAKER
4bc5c69e1cfabebe5c0ead323a9a2a5eSarah Baker’s diverse practice encompasses various modalities – from magazine spreads, and posters, to video, sculpture and performance. Her fictional fashion label Rocco Rosso produces commodity objects such as perfume, and her video works are like television episodes where plotlines about the dichotomy of luxury and greed reflect on a world where materiality triggers the demise of collective reason.
Born in Buffalo, New York, Sarah Baker received her BFA at The San Francisco Art Institute and her MFA at Goldsmiths College.
